Dear Future Teenagers; Grown-ups are Stupid Too Sometimes!

Alternate Titles:
"A Cautionary Camping Tale" or
"Why Doug Thinks I Take Far Too Long to Tell a Simple Story"

When I start this story, you might think you have an inkling as to how it will end.
You don't.

This story starts with the Father's and Son's Camp-out, put on by our church (specifically Doug) last weekend.

Last Friday, Doug got out all the gear, packed a huge duffel bag full of clothing and blankets, gathered our three oldest boys, and headed to a nearby (Momoishi?) beach for the annual Misawa Branch Father's and Son's Camp-out.

Two sleeping bags were left behind, not a single bag of marshmallows was left at the Commissary, and my Boca-burger tin-foil dinners MAY have given D food poisoning; BUT, despite these shortcomings, evidently the event was a huge success.  The boys had lots of fun, all got filthy dirty and came home thoroughly exhausted.

But before coming home, they did a little beach combing.

I'm assuming the goal was to find more of this:

Sea Glass.

We love hunting for sea glass!

As you may have gathered from my recent Giveaway of a sea glass necklace.

Incidental, my friend Mel, was the winner of said necklace.

This is Mel:
This is me dancing at her bachelorette party many many moons ago:

Back when I had boy hair and shopped at the D-A-V (Disabled-American-Veterans Thrift Store.)

Back before my preppy husband purged my soul-and closet-of all style.  And polyester.

Back to the story...

While there wasn't any cool sea glass to be had, Doug didn't come home empty handed.  He brought home a few rocks instead.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, er--base, I was invited to partake in a "Girls Night" with Healthy-Friend-Janeen and her daughters and a neighbor daughter.  After a delicious vegetarian dinner, we did some Mani/Pedi's.  The little ladies in attendance both had their cute little fingers and toes pampered and painted in multi-colored patterns.

Unfortunately, baby Gray (the only boy allowed to attend) was a bit fussy, so my fingers and toes were left unadorned.

Maybe that is what put me in the mood for additional self-improvement and pampering.

Either way, on with the story...

Skipping to Sunday.  I ditched church.  (Due to another series of circumstances involving new dressers and allergies, I was up all night coughing and slept in the next day.)  That afternoon, when I finally dragged my sorry bottom to the shower, I noticed a new addition in said shower.  A small gray rock.  A pumice stone.

Making up for my missed manicure of the other night, I grabbed it and scrubbed my heals vigorously; all the while wondering if this really was a pumice stone and this really was what Doug had intended for it by putting it in the shower.  At some point in my scrubbing, my eyes fell upon my stomach.

Now, don't think me unlady-like for mentioning the following:  Since mid-way through my pregnancy, I've been cursed with a sore affliction.  I've blogged about it before.  It's called...

linea nigra.

black line.

Basically, in some women, sometimes, while pregnant, we get a line of darker pigment running down our stomach.  Mine starts 6 inches above my belly button and goes down to two inches below it.  During pregnancy, it's light.  After your stomach shrinks and it gets compressed it's very dark.

Just one of the fabulous side affects of that wonderful physical condition called pregnancy.

So I had a brilliant idea.  Although this line will eventually fade on it's own, I thought I'd help it along a bit.  In the past I've rubbed exfoliating face scrub on my stomach with minimal result.  This time I thought I'd be a little more efficient.

I used the pumice stone and I pumiced.  Hard.

And then I got out of the shower.

And my stomach started to sting.

And I started to worry.

Maybe I'd gotten little rock particles in my skin!?

Maybe this wasn't such a brilliant idea!?

I decided I'd better spray it with antiseptic spray just to be on the safe side.

I sprayed.

I screamed.

Like a Banshee with a hangnail.

Later, as I tried to nurse Gray without letting him actually touch my blistered stomach, I complained to my neighbor about my affliction over the phone.

After laughing at me and then mocking me and then calling me "Lucy" (as in, I Love....)
she offered to bring over some soothing burn cream.

She brought it over.

I rubbed it on.

I let out an extra, EXTRA loud scream.

She had grabbed the wrong tube.  It wasn't soothing burn cream.  It was extra EXTRA strong antiseptic cream.

And that is the story of how I acquired an eight inch long, one inch wide scab on my stomach.  (And belly button.)

And why I can't hug my kids or nurse my baby normally.

And why you should never use strange Japanese beach rocks on your skin.

No matter how dire your need for a pedicure or how much you love sea glass.

And that is all I'm going to say about THAT!

Post Edit:  It's taken me awhile to get around to digging out my old scrapbooks to find pictures of Mel and I being ridiculous.  So I'd like to report that my stomach is now almost entirely healed...with minimal scarring.  And furthermore, I think the line is lighter!  So it helped!!!

Dear All of my Friends and Family,

Yeah, I know.  We're in a recession.  The job market is shaky.  Your 401K lost 93.2% of its worth.
But seriously.
Enough already.
Do you people know what you're missing by not coming to Japan?
Besides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stay with me in Japan???

Yeah, you're not only missing this...
(He's reproving you with his eyes!)

and this,
(I was 9 months pregnant...sue me.)

and these punks:
(who make cookies on demand...)

You're also missing the 100 Yen Store!!!

Where you can buy this...
("Life is not easy...but not too bad.")
and this...
(Training Chopsticks)
and this...
(Flower shaped "Vegetable cutters - small")
(Used for Bento boxes...and pottery.)

("Milk Tooth Box - Also as a trinket box!")
(Where you put your baby teeth, silly!)

for only 105 yen*!!!
(Honestly, you're losing money by not coming...)

So seriously.

Get your priorities in order people!
And get to Japan!!!

*Yes...technically it should be the 105 Yen store, but that doesn't have the same ring to it, now does it!?!?

That's My Boy!

All of my sons are NOT carbon copies of Doug (and each other) like some people believe.
THIS boy is mine!
At the Mother's Day Tea put on by Sammy's Kindergarten class,
May 14, 2010.
They sang two songs for us, presented us with flowers, and fed us cookies, bread
and Lemonade or Iced Tea.
I love my Sammy-boy!
(And his awesome teacher!)

Gabey's 3rd Birthday and an R2D2 Star Wars Cake

I mentioned that it was Gabriel's 3rd birthday the other day.

Well, we ended up celebrating a week late so Doug could go to the Cherry Blossom festival in Hirosaki.

But I don't think Gabey minded one bit...seeing as how he's three and not calendar savvy enough to know it was a week late.

He choose Star Wars for his theme, so I made him an R2D2 cake.  Since Doug told me I was NOT allowed to spend money on party favors, I printed some Star Wars coloring sheets, we played "destroy the meteor" and that was that.  A million kids came, a million balloons were popped, cake was eaten, presents were opened, messes were made, and a good time was had by all.  Which is all we ask around here.

Happy birthday cute boy!
We sure love you!!!

Oh, and in case you're wondering about the cake, here's how I made it:

How to Make an R2D2 Cake
Use two boxes of Funfetti cake mix.
Get help from a three-year-old birthday boy...

until he spills a gallon of oil.
Remove child from room.
Permanently.

Clean up oil spill.  Try not to think of environmental impact.

Divide cake batter between a Pyrex bowl and two round cake pans and bake.
Frost, decorate, and VOILA...

Easy as pie!!!

(Which isn't all that easy.)

More instructions HERE.

Video Should Work Now!

Sorry...Somehow it got set to private! Try again!

Baby Gray

Doug made a slide show of Baby Gray and posted it on his blog, but we couldn't figure out how to share the link. So I made it again in iMovie and changed it up a bit.

For example, I included video footage of myself giving birth. Very brave of me I think. So if you don't want to see a side view of my nekkid swollen leg, don't watch. (Don't worry too much. It only shows my leg. Nothing else.)

About the music: The song I used is called "Baby Don't You Cry (The Pie Song)" by Quincy Coleman and Andrew Hollander. It comes from the movie "The Waitress" and Gabe insists that I sing it to him every single night. It's definitely a family favorite in the lullaby department. (And in case you've lived your entire life under a rock, the second song is "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong)

Enjoy!!!

Jewelry Giveaway!

Want to win a beautiful, one-of-a-kind necklace?

Enter HERE!

Date Night

Last Friday night we went out and ate at a very yummy restaurant with a big group of friends.
See?  Big.  And this wasn't even everyone.  There were a few more couples in another room.

This is Doug holding Gray.  Our first date since his arrival.

This is my O.B.  and his cutie new baby just two weeks older than Gray.
He ordered uterus.
For realizes.

This is what uterus looks like cooking on a grill:

These are some of the friends who came over to look at, and sample, the uterus.

The purpose of this gathering, was, shockingly, not just to get together to eat uterus.

Nor was it to celebrate me putting on make-up and leaving the house.
(Although that is cause for celebration.)

All of these people got together to say good-bye to our friend Wes who's deploying for 4 or 5 months.  His second deployment since moving here.  One of many men (and women) who left last weekend.

It was a really fun night and the food was delicious.

(Doug's scallops, that he wanted to grill, came cooked in an omelet for some reason.)

But it was sad too.  Because deployments suck.  Bad.  (Pardon my language Mom and Aunt Jeannette.)

They suck for me and I'm not the one without a husband.  Just the friend of the wives-with-kids left behind.  (Only because I have to watch them suffer and it makes me teary and emotional.)

(Fortunately, Doug wont ever be deployed for which I am immensely grateful.)

Anyway, if you want to learn a little bit about what some women with deployed spouses go through, check out THIS article I found awhile ago.  It's worth the read!

Good luck Wes!
Come home safe!
We miss you already!!!

Items of Note/Notorious Items -- April and May edition.

  • It was Gabey's 3rd birthday yesterday, but shhh!  Don't tell him that!  We're not celebrating until next weekend.

  • Tomorrow Baby Gray will be 4 weeks old!  And incredibly, he's getting even CUTER every single day!  Unfortunately, he's not sleeping any better than he was as a newborn...  (Insert haggard looking frowny emoticon with under-eye bags here.)
  • Sadly, apple season is over (the Fuji apples here are the best I've ever tasted!) but strawberry season has begun!  Yum!  (This tiny carton was so sweet and delicious it was almost worth the $4 it cost!!!)
  • Doug went to the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival with Max and some friends yesterday and said it was almost as beautiful as last year.  (See the movie of last years trip in the sidebar.)  (I stayed home because Gray hates his car seat and it's a two hour drive.)
  • Although he was in trouble for being gone about 9 hours longer than planned (slight exaggeration) he barely redeemed himself by buying me a really pretty little pot.
  • The blossoms on base are just barely starting to come out and brave cold, windy, wet Misawa.  (Insert emoticon of me blowing a raspberry at the crappy, crappy weather we've been having here.)
  • I am officially, unequivocally, and utterly ready for warm weather.
And THAT is all I'm going to say about THAT!

Good night!!

A Birth Story: Part 2 (the end)

Warning:  This story gets graphic at precisely 3:48 a.m.  Read at your own risk.

I gave the birthing meditation my best shot, but it wasn't working.  It wasn't even helping.  In fact, it's quite possible it was making things worse.

Luckily, it wasn't long before the anesthesiologist showed up.

1 a.m.
She started explaining epidurals to me.  Calmly and slowly.
I listened.  Calmly.
Sorta.
Inside I was yelling, "JUST STICK ME IN THE SPINE ALREADY!  THIS IS MY FOURTH KID!!!"
She FINALLY finished her lengthy explanation.
"Any questions?"
Me:  "When can you start?!"
Her:  startled..."As soon as you sit up..."
Me:  "How long will it take?"
Her:  "not long..."
Me:  rolling over sitting up...

FINALLY!  Sweet relief.  You natural-birthers are NUTS!  NUTS I SAY!!!!

But wait...one problem...

Me:  "I can still feel my feet!"
Her:  "Well, we don't want you totally numb or you wont be able to push..."
Me: getting frantic "I DON'T WANT TO FEEL MY FEET!  I DON'T NEED TO FEEL MY FEET!  I CAN STILL PUSH WITHOUT FEET! .... FOURTH TIME...!!!!
Her:  chuckles disapprovingly and ignores me.

Curse her!!!

Now for the timeline courtesy of Doug's hastily scribbled notations:

2:45 a.m.
Water breaks.
With an extremely loud popping sound and an incredible gush, I might add!  I'm extremely grateful to not be in my bed at home.

2:58 a.m.
"First feeling of needing to push."
I don't remember this feeling.  Was I awake?  Asleep? In pain?  Who knows.  I have no recollection.

3:00 a.m.
9   100   +1
(I assume that means I was dilated to a 9 and 100% effaced.  Not sure about the +1)

3:24 a.m.
Complete.
Time to start pushing.

Only...wait...!
What's this?

Dr. Ryan is going to let Doug assist with the delivery!  Fabulous!  (for Doug)

But who's going to assist ME with the LABOR?  And who's going to take pictures?
Me, I guess!

I demand the camera and Doug rushes over to put on scrubs.

While the nurse helps me count through the contractions, I hold up the camera and aim it towards my lady bits snapping furiously.

(Many, MANY of these photo's have since been deleted.)

Yes, that's right.  I took pictures of myself giving birth.  How many women can say that!?!?  (How many want to?)

3:48 a.m.
BIRTH  As-yet-unnamed Baby makes his appearance.  He, like Max and Sam, has the cord wrapped around his neck -twice- and has aspirated meconium.  He doesn't cry at first and then only lets out one little squawk while being suctioned--then he's quiet again.  They place him on my chest and I get my first look at him.  He's very purple, limp, and swollen.  I'm glad when they take him away and get to work on him.  While I watch, they place him on a table and lift his arm repeatedly.  It falls back limply.  He's still not crying.  This does not make me happy.

A few minutes later the Pediatrician, Dr. H, comes in to examine him.  He's getting oxygen and when Dr. H listens to his lungs he detects labored breathing and crackling.  After I'm stitched up (he was 9'2"--I ripped.) Doug, Dr. Ryan and Dr. H take my purple baby to get a chest x-ray where they confirm aspirated meconium in his lungs.

Fortunately, after a blessing and about 48 pricks to the heel to draw blood (inducing excessive crying) his lungs are finally declared "clear".

And my beautiful, chubby-cheeked little boy is delivered to me--perfectly healthy.

Later that day, we name him Michael.

But that's another story.

The End

Thank you Dr. Ryan and Dr. H and all the nurses and assistants who helped my baby make it home safe and healthy!  And also Ryan, thanks for indulging my husband and letting him help with the delivery...  even if I did have to hold my own partially-numb legs up and take all the pictures!!!

Happy Earth Day!

These make me really happy!!!  (Watch them at YouTube to see the full view.  Can't shrink 'em.)

A Birth Story: Part 1

For TLC.
I mean...
Design Mom.
I mean...
POSTERITY!

---
April 4, 2010.  Easter Sunday.
10 a.m.
I go to church.  (Conference is delayed for us.)
I'm having contractions.  Regular, but not hard at all.
I give Brother/Dr. Ryan a hard time for not inducing me.  Aren't Home Teachers/O.B.'s supposed to do what you ask?

5 p.m.
Our good friends have us over for dinner.  Tami assumed, rightly, that I wouldn't be in the mood to cook an Easter feast.  See how thrilled I am with life?

Despite my maternal discomfort, I enjoy a delicious dinner (You rock, Tami!!!) and decide I'll force the baby out by over-eating.  My full stomach will push him out!

9 p.m.
Home again.  Still having regular contractions.  I decide to call Labor and Delivery.

Me:  "I'm having contractions 4 minutes apart.  They're not hard at all, but I'm Strep B positive so they told me to come in early...should I come in...?" please please please!

Nurse:  I'm sorry, you said your name is what?  Emily?   ...Strep B...?

Dr. Ryan:  (yelling into the phone over the nurses shoulder.)  "STAY HOME!!!"
(then he comes on the line and I tell him what I just told the nurse.)
"You're probably in pre-labor.  You're fine to stay home until the contractions get harder."

10:00ish
I'm cleaning the house and doing laundry.
Ryan calls from LandD to check on me.   Tells me I'm welcome to come in and get an Ambien to help me sleep tonight.  I walk over to the hospital to get checked out.
Dr. B says I'm still at a 3 and not in real labor or I wouldn't have been walking to the hospital.  (Doesn't that just prove I'm tough?  I ask.  Laughs all around.)
Asks would I like him to strip my membranes.
YES
All of the sudden, I'm screaming (not very tough) and trying to claw my way up the hospital bed.
All of the sudden, I have a contraction that hurts.
A lot.
"WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME!?!?!?!?"

The nurse gives me an Ambien and makes Doug come pick me up.
I get home and fall instantly asleep

And here's where it gets kinda blurry.
12:30 ish
I wake up with a scream.
Real labor has started.  Time to go to the hospital.
I stumble out of bed and Doug calls Roxanna to come over to stay with the kids.
I stumble to the stairs.  I remember crashing a few times.  Keep in mind, I'm only two hours into a sleeping pill so I'm not entirely coherent.  Doug has to help me into the car so I don't fall over.

We go to the hospital and check in.  The contractions are hard.

The Anesthesiologist hasn't come in yet.  I decide to try my Podcast meditation.

It goes something like this...
A chick with an Australian accent tells me:
"Allow yo focus to go into the location of pain.
Breathe into the pain.  Allowin' the enegy of the pain to dispuse as you relax...
Breathin' into the pain...You awe calm, you awe focused..."
Me yelling: "NO I'M NOT"
"Imagine this pain has a colah.  What would it be?"
Me:  "RED!!!!"
"See the colah gettin lighta..."
Me:  "IT'S NOT GETTING ANY LIGHTER...!!!"
"You are in control.  Not the pain...."
Me:  "NO I'M NOT!!!"  (Rips iPod from ears...)

I tried.  I really did.

To be continued....

Love in the Early Morning

It's almost 4 a.m.
Baby Gray and I have been up since 1:30. Which is actually great since I was expecting him to wake up at 2330.

In between feeding and changing and feeding and changing and burping and changing him...and gazing into his soulful eyes... I've been reminded of a few things I'd forgotten over the last three years:

*Babies poop every time they eat. (And they eat a lot.)
But sometimes they poop more than that.
Sometimes they eat and then poop and then poop again five minutes later.
And then again two minutes later...
...and then a little more while you're changing that third one.

*Baby legs are strong! How are such tiny little legs so strong? I can barely control them to change his diaper!
*Baby heels instinctively retract directly into any applied diaper cream, (and/or baby poo...) then spring back out spreading said diaper cream to opposite leg, jammies, mom's hands and dad's leather chair. (Yeah, so maybe I shoulda put a changing pad down. Sue me.)

*Diaper cream is extremely hard to remove. So is mustard poo.
*Baby hands instinctively grab for their wettest, slimiest area once the diaper is removed...then proceed to spread said slime to stomach, face, mommy's arm, and dad's leather chair.
(Let up on the chair, will ya?)

*Baby boys in little baby boy nightie/sleep sacks are the cutest thing EVER!!!

*Happy, clean, full-bellied, heavenly-smelling babies staring intently up at your face...
...even at 4 am...
are worth it.
P.S. One day I'll put make-up on again before having my picture taken...but not today.

Baby Love

I'm home. (As of yesterday afternoon.)
My milk is in. (ouch.)
My belly button is still out. (ick.)

I'm tired. Exhausted. Overwhelmed that I now have four (FOUR) energetic boy-children...

I'm sad that my mom can't be here to see and hold and love and bathe my baby. (She always bathes the baby too early so the cord takes 3-17 weeks to fall off.)

BUT...

I'm thankful for hospitals and drugs (I love you Epidural! You failed me, Podcast Birthing Meditation!) and inspired modern medicine and Doctors and Nurses.

I'm especially thankful for friend-Doctors who can assist awesome husbands in giving Priesthood blessings. (But that's a story for another day.)

I'm thankful for all of our friends here who've;
brought gifts, treats, flowers, and meals,
taken Gabey for play-dates,
and called or come over to visit me.

I'm grateful for Skype so at least Baby Gray can be admired all over the world in real time.

Mostly, I'm just in love with my baby! Looking at him I think "Why did I ever want a girl? Girls are over-rated!!!" I wouldn't trade him for anything. Or any girl. I can't stop kissing his chubby cheeks and neck and lips and feeling his soft, silky hair and skin.

He's perfect!
And he's hungry.
A lot....
Especially at night.

So I should go now.

Goodnight!

He's Here!

Baby ???? Warner was born on April 5, 2010 at 03:48. He is 9 pounds 2 oz and 21 inches! No name decided yet, we have never known the name on any of the kids for the first few hours.
Em is doing great. Baby got a little meconium in the lungs and had some labored breathing but is doing better. They are just keeping a closer eye on him in the nursery. He's already looking better. Oh, and I (Doug) got to catch him! More to come...
